Experiences:

During my training in Syria and Qatar, I have gained wide experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology and received my accreditation from Damascus university in May 1985, and from the Arab Board for Medical Specialization in Obstetrics & Gynecology in November 1994.

  • Damascus Maternity Hospital is a university hospital with 300 beds. It serves, with other hospitals, a population of approximately 5 million and handles over 16000 deliveries per year, most of them are complicated cases and high-risk pregnancies.
  • Women’s Hospital in Doha, Qatar, is the only maternity hospital in the country and handles over 10000 deliveries per year and over 3000 surgical procedures in obstetrics and gynecology. It consists of 288 inpatient beds, 16-suite labor, and delivery ward and a 52-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The hospital provides comprehensive care in Obstetrics & Gynecology with a recently established Assisted Conception Unit. The unit is now running continuously and provides all the assisted conception techniques and had achieved a very good success rate in the last few years.

Throughout my training in busy teaching hospitals, I have acquired the experience and skills that enable me to manage different gynecological and obstetrical problems. My training provided me the skills to be a general obstetrician and gynecologist.

  • Obstetric Experience: I have good experience in the management of normal and abnormal deliveries (including a cesarean section for various indications and all forms of operative vaginal deliveries). I have gained a wide range of experience in managing high-risk pregnancies using modern methods of monitoring and assessment of fetal wellbeing, both antepartum and intrapartum. I have also had the experience in the management of pre-term pregnancies and deliveries and in caring for acutely and seriously ill mothers (like those with severe preeclampsia or eclampsia or severe degree of obstetric hemorrhage). I am competent in carrying out early and late pregnancy scans.
  • Gynecological Experience: I am able to deal with most abdominal and vaginal operations. I have a good experience in performing laparoscopy, colposcopy, and hysteroscopy. I am competent in carrying out gynecological ultrasound including abdominal and transvaginal approaches.
  • Infertility Experience: I have a special interest in infertility and reproductive endocrinology. In the Women’s Hospital, Doha, Qatar, there is a successful assisted reproduction program. By virtue of my training as a specialist at this center, I have acquired the skills to investigate, counsel, and manage couples with subfertility. I have carried out various ovulation induction techniques. I am competent in carrying out hormonal and transvaginal ultrasound for cycle monitoring.
  • IVF and ART experience: I did a special and extensive course in the busy IVF-Unit in Women’s Hospital, Doha, Qatar. Under the support and guidance of the Head of that Unit (Dr. M. Shahata), I performed a lot of inductions, ovum pickups, embryo transfers and frozen embryo transfers. The Unit is well equipped, and we were able to transfer embryos fertilized using ICSI. The overall pregnancy rate of that Unit is about 30%.
  • Research Experience: I have a special interest in doing research. I have carried out several research projects during the last few years. I have carried out the entire background literature search, all the clinical work that was involved, and all the necessary submissions to obtain ethical approval for the studies. I am also able to perform all necessary statistical analysis using SPSS program. I have a special interest in the use of personal computers to perform my research.
  • Teaching Experience: Throughout my training years I was involved in teaching medical students which were attached to the wards where I was working. This included giving tutorials on pre-arranged topics, teaching ward rounds, and informal side-room or labor ward teaching. I enjoy teaching junior staff in various surgical techniques. We have students from Gulf University and several Saudi and Egyptian Universities attached to our unit. I play an active role in teaching those students both formally and informally. I was teaching Obstetrics & Gynecology to the student nurses at the Technical School of Nursing, in Doha, for several years. I was a lecturer in the teaching program organized by the World Health Organization (this program was attended by doctors and nurses working in Health Centers and by social workers). I was also teaching the basics of emergency childbirth to the Emergency Medical Technicians throughout the last few years.
  • Editorial Experience: I am a referee for Qatar Medical Journal and recently appointed in the editorial board of the Arab Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • Qatar Stillbirth Program (QSP): I introduced the Qatar Stillbirth Program in September 1998. QSP is a protocol designed to fulfill the requirement and the resources of the Women’s Hospital in Qatar. By following the QSP protocol algorithm, doctors will be able to perform a step-by-step evaluation of a stillborn infant and a specific etiology frequently can be discovered. Results after 2 years of establishment of the QSP were presented in the Second International Conference on Obstetrics and Gynecology in Qatar held in Doha between 11-13 April 2001.
  • Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL) Clinic: On the 2nd of June 1999, I introduced and started the RPL clinic in the Women’s Hospital, Doha, Qatar. This is the first clinic offering such service in the Middle East. So far, more than 750 patients with recurrent miscarriages were booked in the clinic. We are using a comprehensive protocol for investigation and treatment of recurrent miscarriage. Preliminary results of the first 500 cases were presented in the Second International Conference on Obstetrics and Gynecology in Qatar (held in Doha between 11-13 April 2001) and in the 7th international Symposium on Human Reproduction and Genetics (held in Beirut from 10-11 May 2002).
